70 Year Old Woman Reveals Her Fountain of Youth

Annette Larkins is in perfect health and doesn’t take aspirin.  In fact, she doesn’t take any medication at all, at least by the conventional modern definition. She is a fanatic of REAL medicine and lives by the quote, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” ― Hippocrates

Mrs. Larkins grows a plethora of fruit, vegetables, and herbs around and inside of her house.  She collects rainwater and makes gallons of juice from what she grows. Wheatgrass is one of her specialties. She grows her own and drinks the juice regularly. Yet another anecdotal case of raw food and juicing providing overall health and endless youth.

100 Days: Day Seven ~ Mind Over Matter

Day 1...DONE!
Day 2...DONE!
Day 3...DONE!
Day 4...DONE!
Day 5...DONE!
Day 6...DONE!
Day 7...DONE!

Seven days of working out, juicing and/or drinking green smoothies. Seven days closer to my goal!  I found this quote by Muhammad Ali that sums up how I feel right now.

I'm a champion...a winner! Yeah, it would have been easy to quit, but then I wouldn't have been true to myself. I wasn't created to lose or to give up. Everyday I remind my children that they have greatness in them. This week, I had to say that out loud to myself a few times.

Half the battle toward being your best self  is fought in the mind. A few times during these seven days, the negative committee in my mind convened and proceeded to discuss all the reasons why it would be okay if I didn't work out that day or make healthy choices. And during those times I've had to talk to myself out loud and rehearse again what my goals were. That's when I called the meeting to a close.

Vince McConnell  said, "We must train from the inside out. Using our strengths to attack and nullify any weaknesses. It's not about denying a weakness may exist but about denying its right to persist."

In order to achieve my goals I cannot allow negativity to persist. I must eradicate it at its root. Then and only then will I be able to take the next step to achieving optimal health.

Today's green smoothie consisted of spinach, banana, apple, an orange and pomegranate juice. It was delicious!

For my workout, I had a date with my treadmill.

Tomorrow begins the second week of my 100 day journey! I can't wait to see what it will bring.

100 Days: Day 6 ~ Trial and Error

There are some things in life you get right the first time, and there are others that you conquer through trial and error. Today's green smoothie was one of those which came about by trial and error.

My dear husband used our Vitamix to make some sesame seed milk yesterday and I decided to try it in our smoothie. We had an avocado, a lemon and some frozen bananas, so I added that and some kale greens to the sesame seed milk. It didn't have the greatest flavor but it was packed with nutrition.

According to The World's Healthiest Foods (www.whfoods.com),sesame seeds are an excellent source of copper and a very good source of manganese, but they are also a good source of calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, vitamin B1, zinc, molybdenum, selenium, and dietary fiber. In addition to these important nutrients, sesame seeds contain two unique substances:sesamin and sesamolin. Both of these substances belong to a group of special beneficial fibers called lignans, and have been shown to have a cholesterol-lowering effect in humans, and to prevent high blood pressure and increase vitamin E supplies in animals. Sesamin has also been found to protect the liver from oxidative damage.

Rich In Beneficial Minerals

Sesame seeds are an excellent source of copper, a very good source of manganese, and a good source of magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, molybdenum, and selenium. This rich assortment of minerals translates into the following health benefits:

Copper Provides Relief for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Copper is known for its use in reducing some of the pain and swelling of rheumatoid arthritis. Copper's effectiveness is due to the fact that this trace mineral is important in a number of antiinflammatory and antioxidant enzyme systems. In addition, copper plays an important role in the activity of lysyl oxidase, an enzyme needed for the cross-linking of collagen and elastin—the ground substances that provide structure, strength and elasticity in blood vessels, bones and joints.

Magnesium Supports Vascular and Respiratory Health

Studies have supported magnesium's usefulness in:
  • Preventing the airway spasm in asthma
  • Lowering high blood pressure, a contributing factor in heart attack, stroke, and diabetic heart disease
  • Preventing the trigeminal blood vessel spasm that triggers migraine attacks
  • Restoring normal sleep patterns in women who are experiencing unpleasant symptoms associated with menopause

Calcium Helps Prevent Colon Cancer, Osteoporosis, Migraine and PMS

In recent studies, calcium has been shown to:
  • Help protect colon cells from cancer-causing chemicals
  • Help prevent the bone loss that can occur as a result of menopause or certain conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis
  • Help prevent migraine headaches in those who suffer from them
  • Reduce PMS symptoms during the luteal phase (the second half) of the menstrual cycle
There is a little bit of controversy about sesame seeds and calcium, because there is a substantial difference between the calcium content of hulled versus unhulled sesame seeds. When the hulls remain on the seeds, one tablespoon of sesame seeds will contains about 88 milligrams of calcium. When the hulls are removed, this same tablespoon will contain about 37 milligrams (about 60% less). Tahini—a spreadable paste made from ground sesame seeds—is usually made from hulled seeds (seeds with the hulls removed, called kernels), and so it will usually contain this lower amount of calcium.
The term "sesame butter" can sometimes refer to tahini made from sesame seed kernels, or it can also be used to mean a seed paste made from whole sesame seeds—hull included.
Although the seed hulls provide an additional 51 milligrams of calcium per tablespoon of seeds, the calcium found in the hulls appears in large part to be found in the form of calcium oxalate. This form of calcium is different than the form found in the kernels, and it is a less absorbable form of calcium. So even though a person would be likely to get more calcium from sesame seeds or sesame seed butter that contained the hulls, there is a question about how much more calcium would be involved. It would defintely be less than the 51 additional milligrams found in the seed hulls. And there would also, of course, be a question about the place of hull-containing sesame seeds on an oxalate-restricted diet.

Zinc for Bone Health

Another reason for older men to make zinc-rich foods such as sesame seeds a regular part of their healthy way of eating is bone mineral density. Although osteoporosis is often thought to be a disease for which postmenopausal women are at highest risk, it is also a potential problem for older men. Almost 30% of hip fractures occur in men, and 1 in 8 men over age 50 will have an osteoporotic fracture. A study of 396 men ranging in age from 45-92 that was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found a clear correlation between low dietary intake of zinc, low blood levels of the trace mineral, and osteoporosis at the hip and spine.

Sesame Seeds' Phytosterols Lower Cholesterol

Phytosterols are compounds found in plants that have a chemical structure very similar to cholesterol, and when present in the diet in sufficient amounts, are believed to reduce blood levels of cholesterol, enhance the immune response and decrease risk of certain cancers.
Phytosterols beneficial effects are so dramatic that they have been extracted from soybean, corn, and pine tree oil and added to processed foods, such as "butter"-replacement spreads, which are then touted as cholesterol-lowering "foods." But why settle for an imitation "butter" when Mother Nature's nuts and seeds are a naturally rich source of phytosterols—and cardio-protective fiber, minerals and healthy fats as well?

So although my green smoothie may not have tasted all that great, I gained lots of nutritional benefits from drinking it down.

100 Days: Day Five ~ Tomorrow

Today I commit to quit making excuses. I commit to stop whining and complaining, thinking that I can't. I commit to pushing myself even when I want to give up, because I know that if I put in the work and make the right choices today, my tomorrow will be more than I could ever imagine.

Today I had a Tropical Green Smoothie. It consisted of coconut water, almond milk, pineapple and a banana. It was delicious. I got in a quick workout and I feel great!

Tomorrow is another day and another step on my journey to healthy. I am thankful for every opportunity God has given me to make good healthy choices. I may not always get it right, but tomorrow is another day to do even better than I did today.

100 Days: Day Four ~ Overcomer

Obstacles...hurdles...roadblocks. No matter how much we plan, we cannot control everything in life. There are days when it seems like life throws everything it has at you and you feel like you are sinking. But when you leap over those hurdles, face those obstacles and demolish those roadblocks, you are an overcomer. Today, I am an overcomer!

I didn't give in to my hectic schedule, the yucky weather that slowed us down, and chose not to give in to my exhaustion. And I am glad I didn't. My workout wasn't a long one today, but it was enough to get my blood flowing and my adrenaline up!

Thanks to Pinterest (yes, I admit it. I am a Pinterest junkie!), I found this great leg workout. It was quick and if you do it a couple of times, you get a really good lower body workout.

This morning for breakfast, I had a kale, celery, apple, lemon juice that was really great. I felt satisfied and energized as well.

I've learned in these four days, that I have to move out of my comfort zone and push myself past my own limits both mentally and physically. I can come up with so many excuses as to why I don't have time to exercise. But when it boils down to it, I've been given this one body...that's it. And if I don't take care of it, I will miss out on so much in life. So, I will continue on this journey even when I don't feel like it, because I know in the end, I will be an even better me. ;)

100 Days: Day Three ~ Perseverance

Someone once said that a quitter never wins and a winner never quits. Perseverance...a word defined as steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.

Today was a difficult day. It's a busy day for my family and trying to stay on task with exercise was not easy. But I didn't allow the busyness to cause me to put off what I knew would be another step toward my goal of optimal health. So tonight, I got on the treadmill and although my body was tired, I persevered.

I stayed true to my commitment to continue on this journey to healthy.

This morning for breakfast, I made a green smoothie which consisted of spinach, coconut water, a banana, an orange and an apple.

After lunch, I enjoyed one of my go to drinks by ALO, an alove vera and wheatgrass juice.

Looking forward to another step tomorrow as I travel on this journey to healthy!
